• Leonard Portzline, Class of 1949

Growing up in Enola and has given Leonard a profound pride and interest in improving the quality of life in the East Pennsboro community.

Both East Pennsboro Area School District and the Alumni Association are fortunate to have such an upstanding citizen such as Leonard. He is the type of person whose work ethic gets jobs done without fanfare. Successful town and organizations do well because there are those people of leadership qualities who keep their eyes open for what has to be, should be, or could be done, thinking “What would be nice for this person,” or “What would be best for the association,” . We would like to express our gratitude to Leonard for being such an outstanding citizen in East Pennsboro Township.

Growing up, Leonard was a member of the Boy Scouts of American earning his Life Scout Badge. He served as an electrician in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict earning the rank of E6 in 3.5 years. Upon returning home, he chose to reside, marry and raise his family in the East Pennsboro Area School District. Here he worked as a Field Service Engineer for the Boroughs Corp Computer Company. Around 1960, he was chosen to fulfill a term as a member of the West Fairview Borough Council.

Leonard has been very active in our community. He made safety changes to park rides, oversaw the 1969 renovations of the 800 seat sanctuary in his church and helped raise the funds for the project by planning and cooking for more than 50 church dinners and picnics and he started the efforts to merge West Fairview back into East Pennsboro Township, which saved the nearly bankrupt borough and its fire company. One of his current responsibilities is to coordinate the Alumni Association’s 26 page annual newsletter. He researches and writes feature stories, designs and preps the newsletter for print and recruits people to help with the mailing of the newsletter to the alumni database. Not to mention, he coordinates this Oldies But Goodies Luncheon each spring.

Students could benefit and be greatly inspired by his dedication to this community. Leonard is an outstanding personal and professional example of a passionate and positive role model for all East Pennsboro students. East Pennsboro is proud to induct Mr. Leonard Portzline into the Panther Alumni Wall of Honor.
